Bitcoin futures volume on Binance hit $454B in September, its highest since June, yet open interest stayed near $8B. Turnover jumped without new leverage.

Bitcoin futures volume across all exchanges came to about $1.1 trillion in September 2026, according to a CryptoQuant Quicktake, the busiest month since June. Binance accounted for roughly $454 billion of it. Binance's own API gives the same answer. Open interest on the exchange, though, hardly changed, so the extra trading did not come with extra leverage.

Rebuilding the Bitcoin futures volume number
Binance lists bitcoin futures in three contract families. The big one is the USDT-margined perpetual, which traded $343.5 billion in September. The USDC-margined contract added $87.1 billion and the coin-margined one about $23.9 billion. Together they come to $454.5 billion, within rounding of the Quicktake's $454.4 billion.
Running the same sums for earlier months shows a rising line. August lands at $410.0 billion and July at $354.1 billion. June was bigger than all of them at $503.1 billion, so "highest since June" holds up. The Quicktake puts OKX second and Bybit third, with $190.9 billion and $146.6 billion. Those two numbers are CryptoQuant's own, and this report did not rebuild them.
Price rose, open interest stayed put
Spot bitcoin on Binance rose about 6.4% across September. It started near $78,600 and ended near $83,600, with Bitcoin futures volume rising in step. Leverage did not.
Binance's USDT-margined open interest stayed in a tight band all month, never far from $8 billion. It peaked around September 21 and sagged near the month's end. By October 6 it had drifted back to roughly where it started. A live reading on October 8 shows 96,309 BTC outstanding, close to $8.0 billion at the mark price.
Divide September's USDT-perp volume by an average open interest near $8.2 billion and each dollar of positions turned over about 42 times. Traders were swapping positions faster rather than piling on new ones, which is a different signal from a leverage build.
A few big days did the work
Single sessions carried a lot of the total. September 21 was the heaviest day of the past forty on the USDT perpetual, at $24.5 billion. October 2 came next at $19.9 billion, and September 3 printed $19.1 billion. Ordinary days ran between $10 billion and $14 billion.
The Quicktake's chart adds longer context. Monthly volume across exchanges topped $2.4 trillion in late 2024 and has drifted lower since, with a few rebounds. This September is one of those rebounds inside a much smaller range than the peak. The chart also shows Hyperliquid and Gate gaining visible slices through 2026, so the Binance share is not the whole story. Binance still draws the biggest bar every month, and the exchange-by-exchange split is worth a look before anyone reads one platform's numbers as the market's.
Funding is quiet too. That matters because funding is what longs or shorts pay each other when one side crowds the trade. A reading near zero says neither side is paying much to hold its position. Binance's latest funding rate on the BTCUSDT perpetual reads 0.0006%, which is almost flat. Heavy turnover, flat funding and steady open interest fit a market where people are trading in and out rather than leaning one way.
Binance's public API and CryptoQuant supplied the volume, price and open interest figures, read on October 8. Nothing here forecasts bitcoin, and a busy month for Bitcoin futures volume can come before a move either way.
