JPM Coin On Ethereum Goes Live For Institutional Clients As JPMD

JPM Coin on Ethereum is now live. On October 19 JPMorgan announced that its deposit token, ticker JPMD, runs on a second public blockchain for institutional clients.

What JPM Coin on Ethereum is

JPM Coin is a dollar deposit token. It is issued by Kinexys, JPMorgan's blockchain unit inside J.P. Morgan Payments, and it is only available to the bank's institutional clients. Retail customers cannot buy it.

The token is denominated in US dollars, and JPMorgan calls it a USD deposit token. The bank describes Kinexys as its industry-leading blockchain business unit, part of J.P. Morgan Payments.

The press release says clients can now move money on Ethereum as well as on Base. In the bank's words, the token gives USD deposits a new onchain base liquidity layer. It frames the launch as a step toward multi-chain choice for wholesale money. Transfers between institutional clients can run across chains that use the Ethereum Virtual Machine, including Base and Ethereum.

Why JPMorgan chose Ethereum

JPMorgan gives its own reasoning. Large institutions that deal in both crypto and tokenized real-world assets want onchain cash from established financial firms. They also want it to work with the deposit products they already hold. The bank calls Ethereum's liquidity and tokenized assets the natural next public chain.

It also points to earlier steps. J.P. Morgan Asset Management put tokenized money market funds on Ethereum earlier this year, and the Kinexys platform itself is built on Ethereum Virtual Machine technology. Matthew Dawson, co-founder of Ethereum Institutional, is quoted welcoming the move. Emma Landriault, who leads Kinexys Labs, calls it a meaningful step toward multi-chain options for moving wholesale money across web3 and traditional finance.

The Kinexys figures behind the announcement

The release closes with usage numbers for the wider platform. Kinexys says it has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions since it began, with an average of $7 billion a day. A footnote says the figures come from Kinexys's own volume data, so there is no outside check on them.

Those totals describe the whole Kinexys platform, which includes other products. They are not figures for this launch, so they say little about how much JPMD will be used.

Other Kinexys news on the same page

The release links to several recent Kinexys items. One covers the unit expanding its Blockchain Deposit Accounts with five new Asia-Pacific currencies. Another describes a study with the MIT Digital Currency Initiative on barriers to public blockchain adoption, and a third notes three industry recognitions. They are listed as further reading and are not part of the Ethereum announcement.

What to watch next

Beyond the launch itself, the release only gestures at benefits. Programmable treasury, faster automated decisions and smoother onchain transactions all appear, and the bank frames them as potential and not results.

The practical signals will arrive later. They are how many clients use JPM Coin on Ethereum and how much JPMD sits on each chain, once those figures are shared.
