Ethereum Coinbase Premium Hits -0.117, Yet USDC Pair Shows -0.02%

The Ethereum Coinbase Premium Index fell to -0.1173, but against Binance's USDC pair the gap is only -0.02%. How the quote currency changes the reading.

CryptoQuant's index of ether prices on Coinbase versus Binance has dropped to about -0.1173, which analyst Arab Chain calls the lowest reading in two months. The Ethereum Coinbase Premium reading tracks the gap between the two venues. A negative number means Coinbase is cheaper. In the quicktake, the author reads that as relatively weaker demand on Coinbase, while adding that the signal does not prove US investors are selling.

What the exchange prices show for the premium

The quicktake says that if the weakness persists alongside falling buying volume, it could point to too little demand to support a recovery. It also says a move back toward zero could mark improving demand on Coinbase. Both statements are conditional, and the author stresses that a negative reading does not confirm where price goes next.

The number itself holds up. Daily closes for ETH-USD on Coinbase and ETH-USDT on Binance put the October 12 gap at -0.117%, the same figure CryptoQuant quotes. The last day with a lower reading was August 12, at -0.118%. By the morning of October 14 the hourly gap was about -0.11%, or roughly $2.70 on a coin near $2,500.

Price action gives the gap some context. On Coinbase, ether peaked near $2,568 in the early hours of October 12 and bottomed near $2,419 at midnight UTC on October 13. Early October looked different. The first days of October looked calm, with the gap near zero, but ether then slid from about $2,700 toward $2,500 and the gap widened as it fell.

The quote currency matters

Coinbase's ether pair is priced in dollars. Binance's most active ether pair is priced in tether. If tether trades a touch below a dollar, the same coin shows a higher number in tether terms. The index then turns negative without any change in demand.

Binance also lists an ETH/USDC pair, which is closer to a like-for-like dollar comparison. Against that pair the Coinbase gap on October 14 was only about -0.02%, a difference of well under a dollar. On Binance, one USDC bought about 1.0009 USDT in the same hours.

How closely the premium tracks the quote currency

Over the last 13 days, the hourly gap against the tether pair moved almost in lockstep with the USDC-to-USDT price. The correlation between the two was about -0.97. The gap against the USDC pair showed far less of that pattern, and it stayed within about a dollar the whole time.

That does not make the quicktake wrong, and the Ethereum Coinbase Premium remains a useful gauge. CryptoQuant's own text notes that the gap can also reflect liquidity differences between platforms. It simply means a good share of the move comes from how each venue prices a dollar. Anyone reading the index as a pure demand signal may want to check the tether discount alongside it.

What to watch next

The same index for bitcoin went through a similar reading last week, and TOCE covered it in the Coinbase premium gap article. If the USDC-to-USDT price moves back toward 1.0000, the Ethereum Coinbase Premium should narrow with it. If it stays wide while the USDC pair also drifts lower, the demand reading gets stronger. All prices here come from public exchange candles through the morning of October 14, and none of it is advice to buy or sell ether.
